Paleontological Museum of Rethymno

The Mosque of Mastabas with its peculiar architecture of 9 domes and 13 adjacent cells, the "Priory" and its surroundings is the most well-known monument of Rethymno. It is now a part of Goulandris Natural History Museum as decided by the Ministry of Culture. After its restoration and the completion of the museological study, it functions as a Paleontological Museum / branch of Goulandris Natural History Museum on Crete.

Fortezza Castle

The Castle of Fortezza is the most important monument of Rethymno and the city's trademark. Cultural events and exhibitions are hosted in the restored buildings while in the bastion of Prophet Elias you can find the small municipal theater "Erofili".

Preveli Monastery

This monastery was probably founded in the 16th century. It played a major role in the Cretan Revolution, especially in the revolution of 1866 when it functioned as a shelter for the rebels. It was an extremely wealthy monastery owing land around the area. In 1831 the first Greek School was founded in its premises.

Timios Prodromos in Atali

This is an impressive monastery of renaissance architecture that was built during the 17th century. Thanks to its hillside structure if offers a panoramic view to the Cretan Sea. In the revolution of 1821 the monastery served as a refueling center. When you are there don’t forget to visit the church of St. John which is dedicated to the monastery. Another building worth seeing is the old mill which stands out due to the particular architecture of the interior with its cells, mangers and the courtyard. The monastery is located 34 km. from Rethymno.

Arkadi Monastery & Olive Museum

This is probably the most popular monastery in Rethymno due to its historical value. During the fights for the Cretan liberation in 1866 the place was burnt to the ground. It was built during the 16th century and is a stereotypical example of the monastic architecture of the era. It is also protected by Unesco as a monument of freedom in Europe. The monastery is built on the plateau of Arcadi, 23 km. from Rethymno, and it stands out for its size and architecture.

Preveli

This is the most famous beach of South Rethymno and one of the most beautiful of Crete. The rare palm forest that embraces the banks of Kourtaliotis river and the sandy beaches that is in front of the crystal clear sea, give a magical atmosphere to the place. The palm forest was partially destroyed by fire, but young palm trees have begun to sprout and thus giving Preveli its natural beauty back. The beach is organized so you can find umbrellas and sunbeds as well as canoes to enjoy fun on water.

Geropotamos

Just 20 km. outside Rethymno you will find Geropotamos. It is easily accessed by the highway and it is a fully organized beach, where apart from swimming you can enjoy fun on water with pedal boats. The water of the sea is cool due to the stream that arrives there and forms a small pool at the top of the beach.
